Chemists put much weight in one´s words! In German this phenomenon is called “Etwas auf die Goldwaage legen”, in English (literally translated): “To put something on the gold balance”
Chemistry is almost 4000 years old and was born with the first technical progress made by human beings. First instructions for the production of glas and metals go back to the antique Babylon and appeared in Egypt at the same time. But all the knowlegde and all these instructions back then were almost entirely related to practice which makes it dificult to speak of “science”. The first step towards chemistry as the exact science that it is today was made by Roger Bacon (*1210, +1292), a Franciscan monk. He introduced balances into the world of alchemy to size the starting material. Since then, beam balances have been among the basic equipment of every laboratory. However, the founding fathers of chemistry as an “academic discipline”, as we know it today, were René Descartes and Robert Boyle in the 17th century.
